Opened in 1994, and designed by British Open and Masters champion Nick Faldo, Ocean Dunes GC is aptly named - several holes sit hard by the South China Sea and the entire site is contoured by natural sand dunes. But there's far more to this resort gem. Indeed, it's one of the most diverse layouts in all of Asia: There's an authentic links quality to half a dozen holes at ODGC (where the wind always blows); a tree-lined stretch on the back nine feels like Pinehurst, with its evergreens and pine needle rough areas; and the strategic front nine, with its myriad water hazards, looks and plays like a first-class Florida track. There's something for every taste here, from superior bermudagrass conditions, to ever-shifting winds (Ocean Dunes never plays the same way twice), to the beachfront Novotel Phan Thiet right across the street.

• SIGNATURES: The 9th, a peekaboo par-3 that plays between towering dunes, has been called out by GOLF Magazine as one of the Top 500 holes in the world.

• GETTING THERE: Phan Thiet, three hours by the 5-Star Express (train) or car from HCM City, is the heart of booming Binh Thuan Province, a.k.a. the Vietnamese Riviera.

• SIGNATURES II: No. 9 gets all the ink, but the gorgeous par-4 13th plays all along ocean and the par-5 8th, with its watery left side and peninsula green, is another stunner.

• KARMA STOP: A beautifully preserved East Asian temple sits just right of the third green at Oceans Dunes. It’s a family temple, built to honor ancestors, but feel free to drop in for some good karma.

• ONE-STOP SHOP: Ocean Dunes is the only true “golf resort” in Vietnam, where players can roll out of bed and onto the first tee.

• TOPS IN ASIA: In late 2006, Asian Golf Monthly magazine ranked the top golf resorts in all of Asia. Ocean Dunes and the Novotel Phan Thiet placed 10th on that list.
